1. Conference Venue

The Conference will be held in the top floor of the Super-C, which overlooks the city of Aachen. Conference delegates should be aware that hotels and all conference venues are within walking distance (excluding the excursion on Thursday for which transportation will be provided).

2. City Information

3. Accommodation

Recommendation for accommodations during Tau2014 can be found here. The distance between the hotels and the conference Venue is about 1.7km (22 minute walk) for the Ibis HauptBahnhof or 1.5 (19 minute) for the Ibis Marschiertor hotel. For a single room, the prices are: 79/85euro for the Ibis HauptBahnhof/ Ibis Marschiertor. For a double room the prices are: 89/95euro for the Ibis HauptBahnhof/ Ibis Marschiertor. Both the Ibis Hauptbahnhof and Ibis Marschiertor hotels are located within 500m of the main train station, Aachen HBF.

4. Travel

There are several ways to travel to Aachen Germany. Some options are:

Frankfurt International Airport (FRA) via Train to Aachen

For long distance travel one of the most convenient airports is the Frankfurt International Airport (FRA). A long distance train station is attached to FRA. Upon exiting from the customs declaration area, there are signs to the train station and machines for purchasing train tickets. The machines accept credit cards, bank cards with the maestro symbol and Euros. Instructions are available in German, English and French. It is recommend that one takes either a direct train from Frankfurt(M) Flughafen to Aachen HBF or a train from Frankfurt(M) Flughafen to Köln (Cologne) then Köln to Aachen HBF. The typical price varies from about 57-81euros depending on the connection for a one way ticket. Trains run regularly from 6am-11pm. Depending on the train connection, the trip will take between 1.5-3hrs.

Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN) via Train to Aachen

For travel within Europe, the Cologne-Bonn Airport (CGN) can be used to reach Aachen. Upon exiting from the customs declaration area, there are signs to the train station and machines for purchasing train tickets. The machines accept credit cards, bank cards with the maestro symbol and Euros. Instructions are available in German, English and French. It is recommend that one takes a train from Köln/Bonn Flughafen to Köln(Cologne) HBF then from Köln HBF to Aachen HBF. The typical price is about 16-25euros for a one way ticket. Trains run regularly from 6am-11pm. Depending on the train connection, the trip will take between 1.5-2hrs.

Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) via Train to Aachen.

For travel within Europe, the Düsseldorf International Airport (DUS) can be used to reach Aachen. Upon exiting from the customs declaration area, there are signs to the train station and machines for purchasing train tickets. The machines accept credit cards, bank cards with the maestro symbol and Euros. Instructions are available in German, English and French. It is recommend that one takes a direct train from Düsseldorf Flughafen to Aachen HBF. The typical price is about 16-25euros for a one way ticket. Trains run regularly from 6am-11pm. Depending on the train connection, the trip will take about 1.5hrs.

Brussels International Airport (BRU) via Train to Aachen

For people travelling from Geneva, Brussels International Airport (BRU) is a potential option. Upon exiting from the customs declaration area, there are signs to the  Bruxelles-Nat.-Aéroport  train station. At the station, one can purchase the train tickets to Aachen HBF. It is recommended that one takes the train from Bruxelles-Nat.-Aéroport to Bruxelles-Midi(or Bruxelles-Nord) and then takes a train from Bruxelles-Midi(or Bruxelles-Nord) to Aachen HBF.

Train Travel within Europe

For travel from neighboring countries and within Germany it may be more practical to travel to Aachen by train. For example, there are high speed connections between Paris Nord and Aachen, which takes 2.5hours, and between London and Aachen, which takes 4.5hours. 5. Social Events

The conference will start on Sunday September 14th with a reception at the Bar Museo. On Monday and Wednesday there will be two tours :

  • Tour of the Aachen Dom – Construction of the Palatine Chapel began under Charlemagne around 796, making the Aachen Dom the oldest cathedral in northern Europe. From 936 to 1531 there were 30 kings and 12 queens crowned in  Aachen.
  • Walking Tour – The City of Aachen has a long and rich history dating back to pre-Roman times. In this tour your will learn about the history of Aachen from early Celtic settlements through Roman times to modern Aachen. This includes the history of Aachen during Charlemagne’s Empire and the beginnings of the German civilization.

On Tuesday September 16th, it is recommended the delegates visit the "Ausstellung Karl der Große im Rathaus" (Exhibition on Charlemagne at the City Hall).

On Thursday, there will be an excursion to the RWE Coal Mine near Aachen. The coal mines of North Rhine-Westphalia have been a driving force behind the Germany economy for nearly two centuries, playing an important role in the industrial revolution. In this excursion you will get to visit a modern coal mine and see the technological marvels that have been developed to extract the coal. In the evening after the excursion to the coal mine, the conference dinner will be hosted at the Frankenberg Castle.

6. Wifi

Internet access will be provided at RWTH for all conference delegates. All delegates can receive an ID and password from the registration desk. For those who have an Eduroam account, a registration ID and password is not required, since Eduroam is available throughout the University and the city centre.

7. Weather

The historical average temperature in Aachen during the month of September is 14C, with an average high of 19C and average low of 11C. During September, we expect some periods of precipitation and would advise the delegates to bring an umbrella
