4. Travel to Aachen

Connecting from the Airport to Aachen

From Frankfurt, Düsseldorf, or Cologne use the train to Aachen Main Station (Aachen Hbf). We have uploaded train schedules for Sunday to our web-page. They can be found on the menu bar under Travel. The schedule is also available online. There are trains of different comfort and speed. In the order of fastest to slowest these are ICE, IC, IR, RE, RB. We want to point out one connection from Frankfurt to Aachen: The IC connecting through Mainz (Frankfurt → Mainz → Cologne → Aachen) has a very scenic section between Mainz and Cologne along the river Rhein through a narrow valley with many castles.  It is an UNESCO world heritage site.

You can get tickets at ticketing machines at the train stations. Cash, credit cards and EC-cards (Maestro) are accepted. Or you can book and print your ticket online at bahn.de using your credit card. You can also get a ticket from the personnel on the train, but it costs extra. Tickets for standard fares are valid for all connections with the same class of trains (ICE,IC,etc.).

For bus connects from the Maastricht Airport to the city of Aachen, you will find the bus stop in front of the terminal. The bus driver will sell the tickets.

For people traveling from the Brussels airport to Aachen, it is recommended that you take the local train to “Brussel Midi”. From there you will take the Thalys (French high speed train) to Aachen. It is convenient during the day, but there are no connections in the early morning or the evening. Tickets are available on online.  Alternative routes can be found bahn.de.

From the Train Station to your Hotel

Both recommended hotels, Ibis HauptBahnhoff and Ibis Marschiertor hotels, are in walking distance, around 300 m, from Aachen’s main station. Leave the station through the main entrance and turn right on the main street for Hotel Ibis Hauptbahnhof. You will see the hotel at the next major crossing. For Hotel Ibis Marschiertor turn left on the main street. After about 300 m you will see the ‘Maschiertor’ at the right, on old city gate. The hotel is to your left behind a small green.

5. Moving around Aachen

All the conference locations are within walking distance of your hotels, so is the city center. A map of the locations can be found here. You will also find it on our web-page. It is a 20 to 25 minute walk from any of the hotels to the conference site (Super-C).

Brochures and other touristic information on the city here can be found on the City of Aachen website.

6. Weather

The current weather forecast looks quite good. One should expect temperatures around 20° C (68° F) in the daytime. There is always some probability of rain. An up-to-date weather forecast can be found here.

7. Restaurants

Restaurants can be found throughout Aachen, however the largest concentration of restaurants is located near the city center and on Pontstraße (see the map above Super-C).

8. Electrical Power

The German power grid uses 230 V AC, 50 Hz. German electrical outlets are compatible with connector of Type C, Type F and the new CEE 7/7 (Type E & Type F).
